[CNCF-NBG v22] CNCF Meetup – Multi-Arch Kubernetes & Platform Engineering with Backstage
Dear CNCF Community,
This took a long time to hatch ... I am happy to finally invite you to our upcoming CNCF Meetup, where we will explore two highly relevant topics shaping modern cloud-native architectures: Multi-Architecture Kubernetes and Platform Engineering with Backstage.
🧩 Talk 1: Multi Arch Kubernetes
Speaker: Sarah Julia Kriesch
Abstract:
In this session, you will learn about the evolution of Multi-Architecture Kubernetes. Today, it is possible to combine different hardware architectures within a single Kubernetes cluster. Beyond that, multiple clusters can be connected using service mesh technologies like Istio, enabling them to interact seamlessly as one unified system.
We will cover:
-
Different approaches to multi-cluster connectivity
-
Building multi-architecture container images in a single CI/CD pipeline
-
Running workloads on specialized hardware
-
Using NodeAffinity to schedule applications—for example:
-
AI workloads on GPU-enabled nodes
-
Mainframe applications on s390x systems
-
About Sarah:
Sarah Julia Kriesch is an enthusiastic Open Source Contributor and leads the Linux Distributions Working Group at the Open Mainframe Project. She works as a Mainframe Architect & Open Source Evangelist at Kyndryl, supporting customers in building hybrid cloud environments with open source technologies.
🚀 Talk 2: From DevOps to Platform Engineering – Building IDPs with Backstage
Speaker: Jürgen Maihöfner
Abstract:
Platform Engineering is emerging as the next step in the evolution of DevOps, focusing on creating unified, self-service platforms for developers. This talk explores the transition from DevOps to Platform Engineering and highlights why Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) are becoming essential.
We will take a closer look at Backstage, a leading open-source framework, and its key capabilities:
-
A central developer portal integrating tools, code, and documentation
-
Service Catalog for visibility and standardization
-
TechDocs for Documentation-as-Code
-
Software Templates and Golden Paths for guided delivery
-
Extensible plugins for quality, security, and lifecycle insights
-
Improved onboarding and developer experience
About Jürgen:
Jürgen Maihöfner is an SRE at GfK/NielsenIQ, leading a multinational SRE team. He focuses on automation, infrastructure, and architecture, helping teams improve developer experience and evolve DevOps practices toward Platform Engineering.
