About this event

Volcano Cloud Native Batch Scheduling 🚀

Part of the CNCF Artificial Intelligence Technical Community Group Meeting Series.

Session Overview 🧠

In this session of our bi-weekly TCG meeting series, we have the pleasure to host Jesse Chen from the Volcano Scheduling project, who will be sharing an update with the community on the latest and greatest associated with the project and how it can support AI batch scheduling needs and requirements. ✨

Why Batch Scheduling Matters 💡

  • Ensures Job-Centric Semantics and Coordination: Many distributed jobs require all components to start together. Gang scheduling prevents partial starts that waste resources and stall progress.

  • Improves Cluster Utilization and Throughput: Queues, backfilling, and bin-packing keep nodes busy, reducing idle time and increasing the number of jobs completed per unit of time.

  • Delivers Fairness and Multi-Tenancy: Priority, quotas, and fair-share policies allow teams to share clusters predictably without resource starvation.

  • Protects SLAs and Critical Workloads: Preemption and priority enable urgent or high-importance jobs to obtain resources when needed while maintaining overall system stability.

  • Optimizes for Specialized Hardware: Awareness of GPUs and other accelerators places workloads effectively, avoiding fragmentation and maximizing performance.

  • Simplifies Operations at Scale: Job lifecycle controls, retries, and policy-driven scheduling reduce manual intervention for thousands of concurrent jobs.

  • Controls Cost and Efficiency: Better scheduling decisions translate into fewer wasted resources and faster time-to-results, lowering operational expenses.
