Apache APISIX from Zero: One Gateway for Your APIs and Your LLMs

    in-person

Speaker : Lakshmi Narasimhan Parthasarathy, Principal Engineer at Platformatory

Every service ends up needing the same things at the edge: auth, rate limits, retries, logs, metrics. Now add LLM calls to the list: API keys scattered across services, token bills nobody can trace, and an outage every time a provider goes down.

An API gateway handles all of it once, in front of everything. Apache APISIX is an open source gateway built on NGINX. You change routes and plugins through an API, and they take effect immediately, without a reload. Its AI plugins route LLM calls across providers with fallbacks, rate limit by tokens instead of requests, and block prompts you don't want going out.

We'll run APISIX on Kubernetes, put it in front of a regular service and an LLM, and add auth, rate limiting and fallbacks live, without touching app code. Bring basic kubectl. No gateway experience needed.

  4. 3:00 PM - 3:40 PM IST

Strimzi - Running Kafka at Scale

    in-person

Speaker: Varun N S, Sr Software Engineer (Distributed Systems), Workday

Running Kafka on Kubernetes is easy to get started with. Operating it reliably at scale is a very different challenge. As Kafka deployments grow, platform teams need to handle much more than broker provisioning: storage expansion, scaling brokers in and out, workload and node failures, configuration changes, upgrades, partition distribution, and consistent operations across multiple clusters. Kubernetes primitives such as StatefulSets provide an important foundation, but they do not understand Kafka-specific operational semantics.

In this session, we will explore how Strimzi brings Kafka operations into the Kubernetes-native, declarative model. Starting with a quick look at Kafka’s distributed architecture, we will examine the operational challenges of managing Kafka directly with Kubernetes primitives and how the operator and reconciliation patterns change that experience.

Using practical Day-2 scenarios, including volume expansion, broker scaling, workload failures, and KafkaNodePools, we will see how Strimzi helps turn operational procedures into declarative workflows. We will also look beyond the core Kafka cluster at Strimzi’s CRDs and ecosystem capabilities, including MirrorMaker 2 for cross-cluster replication and Cruise Control integration for Kafka rebalancing. The goal is not simply to show how to deploy Kafka on Kubernetes, but to understand how Strimzi helps teams operate Kafka consistently, repeatably, and at scale while keeping Kafka’s distributed-system semantics visible.
