Navigating the Outreachy Initial Application (CNI August Meetup)
Cloud Native Ilorin hosted a practical session for people interested in starting or growing their journey in open source through the Outreachy internship programme.
The session began with the fundamentals: what Outreachy is, how open source works, and why programmes like Outreachy can create pathways into real-world open source communities for people from underrepresented backgrounds.
We also addressed common misconceptions about Outreachy, including the belief that it is exclusively for women. We discussed eligibility at a high level and highlighted that eligible applicants of different genders can participate.
The main focus was the initial application process. We walked through how to approach the application, with particular attention to the written essays and how applicants can communicate their experiences, motivations, circumstances, and relationship with open source clearly and authentically.
Rather than presenting a generic formula for "perfect" essays, we examined three real applications that had successfully progressed through the Outreachy initial application stage multiple times. These examples helped us identify practical patterns in how successful applicants presented their experiences and answered the application questions.
The session was designed for both people completely new to open source and those who already have some experience and are looking for a structured pathway into larger open source communities.
