Two talks, food, and time to talk

The next Cloud Native Münster Meetup is coming up and you're invited. Whether you've been running Kubernetes for years or are just getting started, come by and meet people from the community in the Münsterland region and beyond.

This time we're covering PostgreSQL and workload identity. Jan Karremans asks what actually makes PostgreSQL cloud native, given that moving it to a cloud VM isn't enough. Nico Wunder shows how services can trust each other without relying on IP addresses or static secrets.

Good to know

Food and drinks are on us. Jan's talk is in English, Nico's is in German. Please register so we can plan the catering.

About Cloud Native Münster

Cloud Native Münster is a community meetup for developers, platform engineers, DevOps folks, and anyone curious about cloud native, from the Münsterland region and beyond. We're part of the global cloud native community and get together to share what we know and learn from each other.

We look forward to seeing you!

    Is your PostgreSQL truly Cloud(native)?

    in-person

Was dann?

As organizations modernize their platforms with containers, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and microservices, databases are often the last piece to truly transform. Simply lifting and shifting PostgreSQL to a cloud VM does not automatically make it cloud-native. So what does? We’ll cut through the buzzword bingo and examine what they mean for PostgreSQL in real-world environments. Drawing from decades of database experience and years running PostgreSQL in Kubernetes, this session highlights how cloud-native principles such as automation, resilience, observability, and rapid redeployment reshape the way developers and DBAs collaborate. Whether you are a developer, DBA, architect, or decision-maker, this talk will help you assess where you stand today and what it takes to make PostgreSQL a true enabler of speed and innovation in modern cloud environments.

Wer bist du, Workload? Workload Identity mit SPIFFE und SPIRE

    in-person

    Was die Teilnehmenden mitnehmen:

    Talk in German.

How does a service actually know who it's talking to? In dynamic cloud native environments, IP addresses change and shared secrets are often hard to manage. Workload identity starts here: trust is based on an application's verifiable identity, not on where it runs.

Using a concrete example, we look at the challenges that come up when moving from an on-premises environment with static secrets to dynamic cloud native workloads. Then I'll show one possible approach using SPIFFE and SPIRE: How do workloads get an identity, how is it verified, and how can you build secure communication on top of it? We'll also separate identity from authorization, because who may access which resources is still a decision of its own.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of services, APIs, secrets, and authentication is expected. Container and Kubernetes basics help. You don't need any prior knowledge of SPIFFE or SPIRE.

    What you'll take away:

    • Workload identity: the basic idea and why it's useful
    • SPIFFE as the standard, SPIRE as the implementation
    • Challenges in brownfield environments
    • Spotting typical pitfalls when moving from static secrets to workload identity
