Talk 1: One Image, Three Runtimes - What OCI Actually Promises
Ever wondered how the same container image can run across different environments? Or why Kubernetes doesn't need Docker to run containers?
In this session, Nishant Kumar Thakur, Senior Computer Scientist at Adobe, will take us through the world of container images and runtimes. We'll see the same image running across Docker Engine, containerd, and Apple's open-source container tool, while exploring what actually goes on behind the scenes.
You'll get a clearer understanding of container images, runtimes, OCI compatibility, and how containers work across different environments without getting lost in the jargon.
Talk 2: Beyond Bookmarks - Build a Developer Portal with Backstage
Speaker: Sonam Raj (Computer Scientist at Adobe)
How many tabs do you open just to find your team's services, documentation, CI dashboards, and monitoring tools? Backstage brings these pieces together in one place. In this beginner-friendly, live-coding session, we'll build a Backstage instance from scratch and create a custom plugin that fetches data from an API.
Along the way, we'll explore the Software Catalog, understand how plugins work, and see how a simple component can display relevant information for each service. We'll also look at how tools like Kubernetes, TechDocs, and GitHub Actions fit into the Backstage ecosystem.
No need to just hear about developer portals - you'll get to see how the pieces come together!
