About this event

Welcome to Cloud Native Trento - UniTrento: Kubernetes in research & service mesh!

This event is co-organised and sponsored by the UniTrento DISI (Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science).

Join us for this event and help us shape the world of cloud native technologies in Trentino Alto-Adige.

We're an official user community group of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF).

Speakers

Sarah Christoff -

Matteo Franzil - PhD Student in Information Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Trento, Italy. His research focuses on the investigation of real-time and scalable end-host monitoring solutions, aiming to extract clearer insights in a more intelligent and efficient way.

Lorenzo Cereser - Computer Science master's graduate of the University of Trento and independent researcher at CRITLab, following a research period at the Shinagawa Lab, University of Tokyo. Currently working in technology strategy consulting at Boston Consulting Group, after roles at KPMG and Accenture.

2. Sharpening Kubernetes Audit Logs with Context Awareness

Kubernetes comes with a powerful observability feature: audit logs. They provide a detailed chronological record of all API interaction in the cluster, but are disabled by default. If you try turning them on, you will see why: an endless flow of seemingly disaggregated information will start filling up your disk, as the various components of the cluster talk to each other and react to requests. In this talk, we will see how using a combination of heuristics and machine learning logs can be meaningfully grouped and correlated in real time, streamlining data consumption both for simple and complex cluster actions.

3. ReCluster : Managing heterogeneous Kubernetes clusters by custom metrics

Kubernetes usually treats nodes as interchangeable; they aren't always, especially if you upcycle older machines to cut cost and e-waste, or when you simply have to make smart use of whatever infrastructure is on hand. ReCluster makes node heterogeneity work with vanilla Kubernetes: it scores nodes by the metrics that matter to you, such as energy, cost, and performance, while consolidating workloads onto the most suitable machines.
