About this event

Cloud Native Platform Engineering Japan is a Platform Engineering community launched as a subgroup of CNCJ, the Japan chapter of CNCF. It serves as a space where cloud native technology practitioners, engineers, and managers involved in internal platform development and operations can gather and share knowledge. We also aim to work closely with upstream activities such as CNCF Platform Engineering Technical Community Group, serving as a bridge to the global community.

As the first event of this community, we are hosting a kickoff event. It's a valuable opportunity to learn about Platform Engineering fundamentals, case studies, and CNCF activities in one evening, including a spectacular keynote. We look forward to your participation.

📅 Event Schedule

  • 19:00: Venue Open

  • 19:15〜19:20: Opening

  • 19:25〜19:45: Keynote (English) Bridging the Gap: A Community-Driven Approach to Japan's Platform Future Platform Engineering is a global movement, but its success in Japan hinges on solving one critical problem: a tech talent gap that affects over 70% of organizations. How can we bridge this divide? This keynote will show that the answer lies not in simply adopting global trends, but in building a uniquely Japanese approach centered on community.

We will explore a practical, community-driven strategy to turn this challenge into a strength. You'll learn how to build two critical bridges: 1 An external bridge to the global Open Source community, accessing world-class technologies while contributing back.

2 An internal bridge using InnerSource principles to scale knowledge, break down silos, and empower your teams from within.

Join us to see how this dual approach creates a powerful feedback loop—accelerating your platform's maturity and your team's skills simultaneously. You'll leave with a clear vision for closing the talent gap and building Japan's platform future, one contribution at a time. Speaker: Vincent Caldeira / Chief Technology Officer / APAC at Red Hat, K.K.

  • 19:50〜20:00: Session 1 (Japanese) Platform Engineering from the CNCF Perspective This session explores Platform Engineering from the perspective of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). It introduces how CNCF projects, community initiatives, and certifications — such as the Technical Community Group (TCG), Platform Engineering Maturity Model, and CNPA/CNPE programs — are shaping the future of platform practices.

Speaker: Hiroshi Hayakawa, Senior Platform Engineer, LY Corporation

  • 20:00〜20:15: Break

  • 20:15 - 20:30: Session 2 (Japanese) Avoiding Pitfalls When Adopting Gateway API: Secure-by-Default Design with Kuadrant and Keycloak

The Gateway API is gaining popularity as a modern alternative to Ingress for routing in Kubernetes. By clearly separating the responsibilities of platform administrators and application developers, it has become a key focus area from a Platform Engineering perspective. However, when introducing the Gateway API in production, security considerations are essential. In particular, it’s important to establish mechanisms that allow developers to flexibly configure authentication and authorization for each application, while ensuring a secure-by-default posture where security is guaranteed out of the box.

In this session, we’ll demonstrate practical approaches to integrating authentication and authorization into a Gateway API environment using Kuadrant and Keycloak. We’ll also showcase configurations that deny all traffic by default to prevent unintentional exposure of services. Attendees will gain insights into best practices for secure API management, as well as key points for integrating these tools effectively—valuable for both developers and platform operators alike.

Speaker: Genki Matsuda / Software Engineer / Hitachi, Ltd.

  • 20:35 - 20:50: Session 3:

TBD: A case study session by Mercari, Inc. is scheduled.

Speaker: Raphaël FRAYSSE / Senior Engineering Manager / Mercari, Inc.

  • 20:50 - 20:55: Closing
