Distributed Tracing at Scale: Lessons From More Than Billion Spans per Day

In this talk, we start with a brief introduction to distributed tracing and the problems it solves. We then look at how the tracing landscape has evolved over time and the challenges this creates for organizations that adopted tracing years ago.

A key theme is why consolidating on a unified tracing stack is essential to get the most value out of distributed tracing. We cover what it takes to make that happen in practice, such as consolidating on the same trace context propagation format across all services and protocols.

We also discuss the challenges that emerge when more and more services and teams adopt tracing, such as the growing volume of data and strategies for dealing with it.
