p-SWAMP — Building the Control Room of the Future
As synchronous generation retires and converter-interfaced renewables grow, Transmission System Operators (TSOs) face declining system inertia, deeper HVDC penetration, and increasingly volatile power flows. Addressing these challenges requires a step change in situational awareness, beginning in the control room.
This workshop introduces p-SWAMP (Power-Stability Wide Area Monitoring Protection), an open, modular R&D platform for next-generation Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection and Control (WAMPAC). Built on high-fidelity Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) data at millisecond and microsecond resolution, p-SWAMP provides researchers and TSOs a testbench for developing and validating the monitoring, control, and protection tools the future grid will require. p-SWAMP builds on NEWEPS (Nordic Early Warning Early Prevention System), developed by Statnett with Svenska kraftnät, RISE, SINTEF, NTNU, and KTH.
It extends that work with a Kubernetes-based microservices architecture, advanced 3D visualization, and AI/LLM-enhanced operator support, built on open standards including the ENTSO-E Common Information Model (CIM). p-SWAMP was contributed to LF Energy in 2025 by Statnett, SINTEF, NTNU, and RISE.
What to Expect The workshop covers core WAMPAC functionality — including monitoring of low-frequency oscillations and system splits — alongside operator interface design, alarm logic, and communication workflows within and between TSOs. A live demonstration will show the platform in action, followed by an open discussion on architecture, use cases, and collaboration opportunities.
Note: Developers are encouraged to bring a laptop; setup instructions for running a p-SWAMP instance will be provided. Pre-configured stations will also be available.

Vikaran Khanna, Statnett SF Vikaran Khanna is a Senior Advisor at Statnett, Norway's transmission system operator, working on the intersection of electrification of energy and digitalization of information. He leads innovation and R&D activities focused on digital substations, AI, and future grid technologies.
Geir Borse UNICUS
Geir Borse is a Consultant Manager with auticon (formerly Unicus). He is working on problems in data analysis, data science, data engineering and data platforms. He is currently developing the future versions of p-swamp.
Hallvar Haugdal, SINTEF Energy
Hallvar is a researcher at SINTEF, where he is working with topics including power system, modelling, simulation and stability, and wide-area monitoring, protection and control. He is also an active contributor to the p-SWAMP project.
